Paving New Roads: Veterans in Transportation

We’re proud to honor the service and skills of our veterans, especially as they bring their discipline and expertise to the transportation sector. Veterans and reservists have unique opportunities to leverage their training for rewarding roles in this rapidly expanding field.

The pandemic highlighted the critical need for skilled drivers in the trucking industry, with a significant shortage of personnel to maintain the supply chain. Fortunately, there are specialized programs assisting veterans in transitioning their military skills to civilian transportation careers:

  • The DOT and FMCSA Military Programs offer initiatives like the Skills Test Waiver and the Even Exchange Program, simplifying the process for veterans to acquire a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • The Department of Labor supports veterans through the Transition Assistance Program and the Registered Apprenticeship Program, which can align with GI Bill benefits.
  • The Department of Defense provides resources like the Credentialing Opportunities On-Line (COOL) and the SkillBridge program, enhancing veterans’ ability to move into the civilian workforce seamlessly.
  • Lastly, the Department of Veterans Affairs offers the Veteran Readiness and Employment Program, tailoring services to match veterans’ skills with suitable employment opportunities, including in transportation.

Let’s drive forward by supporting these programs that recognize the invaluable contribution of our veterans to the transportation industry.

Drive safely and take care,
